An Article on the Three Elms

"The
Three Elms – even the oldest King’sman will remember them. They are older than
the college itself, probably by some fifty years. When Mr. Grey made the sketch
to which we have already drawn attention, these three trees must have stood alone
in their quiet dell. There was no road led by them, and no right-of-way had been
aquired through the fields which seperated the College from the town. Long
Pond
was in the College grounds, and the level ground to the east of it was
the cricket field. There was no intervening spruces, so the graceful elms were
in full view of this field, and the path from the College to the field led by
them : hence the name, which still survives, of the "Three Elms Cricket Club".
When, in after years, the spruces grew up on the higher ground about them, the
elms were almost hidden from sight, and it was not much more than fifty years
ago that the trees were cleared away so as to bring them again to view."
